Why is lipedema fat tissue diet-resistant?

If I lose weight everywhere except my legs...

Unlike normal fat, lipoedema fat is diet-resistant. This means that even with a radical diet or intense exercise, the areas affected by lipedema will not noticeably lose volume. The rest of the body does.

There is no scientific explanation as to why lipedema fat is diet-resistant.
  1. Hypertrophy and hyperplasia: One theory is that lipoedema is due to the size of the fat cells. Compared to normal fat cells, the fat cells in lipedema are enlarged (known as adipocyte hypertrophy). The enlarged fat cells have more estrogen receptors and are therefore more susceptible to hormonal changes. The activation of the receptors causes them to multiply so quickly that even a radical diet cannot help (known as adipocyte hyperplasia).
  2. Lymphatic problems: In addition, the enlarged fat cells can cause lymphatic congestion. An accumulation of protein-rich tissue fluid leads to increased fat storage, which increases lipedema. This, in turn, worsens the drainage of tissue fluid and the vicious cycle begins all over again.
  3. Inflammatory processes: People with lipedema may experience chronic inflammation in the fatty tissue. This inflammation can interfere with the body's ability to burn fat and make the fat tissue more resistant.
  4. Metabolic changes: People with lipedema may have metabolic changes that affect the metabolism of fatty tissue and make it harder to break down fat.
