One in ten women worldwide suffers from lipedema, and one in ten has no or limited access to healthcare services. Every person with lipedema should have the right to a qualified diagnosis and effective treatment. However, lipedema is often difficult to diagnose and treat, and many patients experience years of delay in diagnosis and treatment due to challenges and barriers in the healthcare system. We have compiled a list of all the steps that should be taken to ensure optimal healthcare for lipedema.

LipoCheck believes that everyone deserves a diagnosis, disease-specific treatment, financially affordable care, medical support and education about their own body. Through technological innovation, medical expertise and collaboration with healthcare professionals, we want to make this possible - for a better quality of life.

With the goal of developing a certified medical device with proven medical benefits and value for everyone, we want to help establish optimal health care for lipedema.

LipoCheck’s Manifest

1. Early Diagnosis

Early diagnosis of lipedema should be made for every person, as this offers the best chance of minimizing the symptoms and effects of the condition. Lipedema is a progressive condition that can worsen over time if left undiagnosed and untreated. Many sufferers do not know what is causing their body changes, and many medical professionals are unfamiliar with the signs and symptoms of lipedema, resulting in long periods of suffering and misdiagnosis.

We enable early detection with our image recognition function LipoCheck – anytime, anywhere with a smartphone. With just two photos and a lipedema-specific questionnaire, users of the LipoCheck app receive an assessment of whether lipoedema is present, which areas are affected and whether there are any accompanying symptoms, such as edema. Data on the clinical picture is recorded that was previously unavailable to the patient and medical professionals and can be used as an objective diagnostic criterion. This not only provides information about one's own body, but also enables the documentation of the course of the disease and, in combination with the lipedema diary in the app, a check on the success of the therapy.

2. Easy and quick access to medical professionals

Everyone should have the opportunity to be evaluated by a healthcare professional who is familiar with the clinical picture of lipedema. An important part of lipedema health care is comprehensive diagnosis and medical education. However, because lipedema is still a relatively "young" disease in the medical community, there are few medical professionals who have the necessary experience in diagnosing and treating lipedema.

With the LipoCheck app, we provide quick and easy access to health care services provided by medical professionals. This is made possible by developing a health platform that digitally connects patients with physicians who specialize in this condition. This gives patients access to experts that previously required long waits or travel. At the same time, doctors get a complete overview and documentation of the patient's individual condition and save time during the consultation.

3. Disease-specific care at any weight

Every patient with lipedema should receive targeted treatment, whether they are overweight or not. Because lipedema can occur in conjunction with obesity or overweight, many physicians are not always able to distinguish between the two. However, different therapeutic measures are required to achieve an improvement in health status.

The LipoCheck image recognition function not only detects the severity of lipedema, but also associated conditions such as obesity and edema. This makes it possible to provide individualized therapy and treatment recommendations, while providing evidence of targeted care.

4. Individualized and targeted treatment

Healthcare for lipedema should be tailored to the symptoms, individual needs and physical condition of each person. A comprehensive treatment approach should include a combination of different therapeutic approaches to relieve the symptoms of lipedema, prevent its progression and improve quality of life.

The LipoCheck app combines the possible therapeutic approaches based on the information entered into the app. The app includes features such as recording symptoms, exercise and dietary habits, and mental well-being, as well as progress reports, monitoring medications and treatments, and providing information to help people manage their condition. This allows people to better understand their symptoms and how their condition is progressing, and allows their doctor to plan better and more personalised treatment.

5.Respectful treatment without stigmatisation

Everyone with lipedema deserves to be listened to with respect and without stereotyping. Unfortunately, people with lipedema often feel that they are not taken seriously in certain situations, which can increase their suffering.

We are committed to raising awareness of lipedema because awareness leads to acceptance. By providing scientifically based information about lipedema, we want to help raise awareness among the general public and healthcare professionals and ensure that people with lipedema no longer experience a lack of understanding or inappropriate comments. In addition to our publicity work, the LipoCheck app will be made available to everyone. At the same time, we are working with various medical experts to ensure that a wide range of information is covered, which will also be made available to healthcare professionals for education and training purposes.

6. Psychological support

Comprehensive lipedema management should include psychological care and support. Lipedema is a condition that can have psychological as well as physical effects. The psychological effects of lipedema can range from eating disorders to anxiety and depression. It is important that the person's mind is taken into account in treatment and care.

For us, mental wellbeing is very important with and in lipedema. The first step towards mental wellbeing is simply offering support and understanding the condition. Functions in the app aim to strengthen self-acceptance and self-confidence. We are also enabling community sharing and creating a safe place for people to ask questions and share ideas.

7. Objective diagnostic criteria

There is still no agreed definition of the diagnostic criteria for lipoedema. This leads to different assessments by different doctors and makes it difficult to recognise the condition. As a result, many diagnoses go unrecognised. At present, only experienced doctors who are familiar with the clinical picture can make a qualified diagnosis based on years of treatment experience. Similarly, staging is based on the patient's appearance and does not take into account pain and quality of life.

Our goal is to make the diagnosis of lipedema clear and understandable for all healthcare professionals and patients. By intelligently combining data, we calculate more meaningful measurements based not on BMI but on the true clinical picture. The results can then be made available to the treating physician and care providers for appropriate treatment.

8. Financial sustainability

Everyone should have access to affordable treatment options. The cost of lipedema treatment is not always covered by health insurance. This can mean that people with lipedema have to pay for treatment out of pocket, which can deter many people from seeking medical help.

No one should face additional financial hardship just to improve their health. By providing information on different treatment options, people should be given realistic treatment options. Features in the app allow for the development of a treatment plan with the treating physician.

9. Science-based education

Everyone should have the right to access scientifically based health information.

We provide education. Through our integrated knowledge library, everyone has access to a wealth of science-based information about lipedema and related conditions.

10. Research on Lipedema

Research on lipedema is relatively new and there are still many unanswered questions. More research is needed to better understand the causes and treatment options.

We need more research into lipedema. We want to do this in collaboration with university hospitals and professional associations. By collecting and analyzing anonymous health data, we hope to gain more insight into which treatments are effective, how lipedema develops, and the role of hormones or other conditions in determining treatment options.

What are our goals?

  1. A better quality of life for people with lipoedema: With LipoCheck, we provide easy and quick access to targeted lipoedema care and diagnosis. With the goal of providing daily digital support to millions of women with lipedema and their physicians - from detection, education and documentation to therapy support - we want to give lipedema patients the quality of life they deserve.
  2. Sustainable healthcare: Objective assessment of the clinical picture and individualized treatment recommendations enable targeted therapy that is limited to the necessary measures. Unnecessary interventions are avoided, conserving resources for the patient and the healthcare system.
  3. Reduce the burden on healthcare professionals during consultation and documentation: The comprehensive progress documentation integrated into the app makes it possible to check the effectiveness of therapeutic measures. This saves time and nerves during the consultation and enables support in diagnosis and targeted treatment.
