Self-management describes the ability to take care of your own health and development independently and autonomously. It doesn't work without you and your motivation. It's understandable that it can sometimes be difficult to manage. Components of lipedema self-management - what does it involve?

Self-love

Self-management starts with learning to love yourself and your body. Especially with lipedema, it takes a lot of self-love to face the challenges of each day. Often, a few powerful words that you say to yourself over and over again can help:

Compression therapy

Compression therapy is one of the most important elements of conservative therapy. First and foremost, it assists lymphatic drainage, thus preventing the development or increase of edema. For some patients, compression garments also help to reduce pain and heaviness.


Because compression stockings must be worn regularly, if not daily, for medical reasons, self-management is especially important. This includes adherence to hygiene standards, careful planning and measuring circumferences to detect changes.


Manual lymphatic drainage

Depending on the phase of Complete Decongestive Therapy (CDT) and the findings, a lot of time is spent with and during Manual Lymphatic Drainage (MLD). This can be tiring and sometimes annoying, especially if the nearest physiotherapy practice is not in the immediate vicinity. However, there are ways to stimulate lymphatic flow yourself. Sport and exercise

Physical activity not only helps to stimulate lymph flow, but also boosts circulation and increases well-being. Exercising at your own pace releases endorphins, which also help to keep you entertained. In addition, sports and exercise help to prevent weight gain. Setting weekly goals can help you get into a routine:

Nutrition

A healthy, balanced, and varied diet is essential for your overall health. It also plays an important role in the treatment of lipedema and edema. For example, an anti-inflammatory diet can help reduce inflammation in the body and relieve symptoms.

The important thing is to try what is good for you and, of course, what tastes good.

Clothes

Did you know that we can communicate with our clothes? Feelings, preferences, well-being - our choice of clothes expresses it all. There are countless ways to choose what to wear, and everyone can find their own style. Wear what makes you feel good and you will look great! The community can help you choose what to wear if you are unsure.

Skincare

The natural skin barrier is often compromised by the wearing of compression garments or excess fat, making the skin more susceptible to infection and poorly healing inflammation. Daily skin care is therefore essential.

Concomitant illnesses

Particularly with lipoedema, concomitant illnesses often occur. Recognizing these at an early stage and initiating appropriate therapeutic measures are important for you and your lipoedema. Use our app to find out about concomitant illnesses, visit a doctor if there are any unusual changes, and take preventive action against them.
